Dev Updates
We Had a Gameplay Reveal Plan. … But We Threw It Out.
We Had a Gameplay Reveal Plan.
… But We Threw It Out.
When we announced Breakaway Hockey League, we had a pretty traditional plan for what came next.
Develop the gameplay behind closed doors. Run private tests to get feedback, keep gameplay under wraps, while we polish the systems and presentation. Then, when everything was ready, release a highly produced gameplay trailer at some showcase showing Breakaway at its best.
That’s how sports games are usually revealed. Presented to you.
We’ve decided not to do that.
Beginning October 13 at 2:00 p.m. ET, we’re going to start showing you Breakaway Hockey League while it’s still in (Pre?) Alpha.
Unfinished systems, incomplete animations, work-in-progress mechanics, weird bugs, things we love, things we know still need work, all of it.
F@#% IT… WE’RE DOING IT LIVE!
Every two weeks, members of the team will host a focused live development stream that reveals and deep dives into a specific part of the game.
We’ll show you how a mechanic or system currently works, explain what we’re trying to achieve with it, talk about what we think is working and what still needs improvement, how we got there, and answer questions directly from the community.
Then, as development continues, we’ll come back to those same systems and show you how they’ve changed.
That means you won’t just see Breakaway getting built. You’ll see why it’s being built the way it is and give your feedback on it.
Discord Gets the First Look
Every major gameplay reveal and deep dive will happen first, live inside the Breakaway Discord.
We want these reveals to be conversations rather than broadcasts.
During each stream, you’ll be able to talk directly with members of the development team, ask questions about what you’re seeing, give us immediate feedback, and discuss the systems alongside the rest of the community.
After each stream, gameplay and highlights will roll out across our studio’s social channels.
But if you want to see things first, and be part of the discussion while they’re happening, Discord is where we’ll be.
We’ll also be bringing on fun and exciting guests from time to time to help us reveal things.
Built With the Community
Breakaway is a team-based hockey game built around player control, mechanical skill and teamwork.
We think the way we develop the game should reflect that philosophy too.
Players shouldn’t only see the final result. You should have the opportunity to understand the decisions behind it, question those decisions, test the game yourself and help us make it better.
Your feedback won’t mean that every suggestion automatically becomes part of the game. Ultimately, our team still has to make the calls that we believe are right for Breakaway and the vision we are building it with.
But we want those decisions to be informed by the people actually playing it.
If sports games are usually presented to their players, Breakaway will be built with ours.
The First Reveal: Pre-Alpha Gameplay, Skating & Movement Mechanics
Our first Dev Stream takes place:
- October 13, 2026
- 2:30 p.m. ET
- Live in the Breakaway Discord
- http://bhl.game/discord
For the first stream, we’ll formally introduce this new approach and show an extended look at Breakaway Alpha gameplay.
The team will deep dive into:
- Skating and movement
- Forward and backward transitions
- Crossovers, Agile skating, Sprints
- And more!
We’ll also take live questions and feedback from the community and preview what we’ll be digging into during future development streams.
And this is only the beginning.
As development continues, we’ll dive into more of the systems that make Breakaway work, introduce more of the team building them, and eventually put more of the game directly into your hands through our closed playtests.
